Amending a 1040 Return

Need to amend a return for a new client who I have not worked with previously. In researching this:

Amending an individual return (1040X) in ProSeries (intuit.com)

It appears I would prepare the return from scratch initially, prior to amending it? Is that correct or is there some other way to populate the needed information into a 1040 and then amend?

If the original return was prepared with TurboTax or ProSeries and you have the electronic file for the return, you can import that into ProSeries, then amend the return.

If all you have is a pdf of the return I would recreate the return as originally filed.. then amend it.
