Some say make a copy of the return before you start but I just open up the 1040X form and go at it. Of course, I do keep a paper copy of the return for my files before I start surgery on the return.

I do the same... that way when i transfer the files to the next year, I don't have two files for the client. I also keep a paper copy of the original before Xing......
