E Filing Prior Year Returns

Hello All:

I have a question regarding electronic filing of prior year individual returns: In the past prior year returns had to mailed in, is this still the case?  I am preparing a 2017 return and I have the boxes checked to efile, the software is not telling me I can't efile.  Any advice will be very much appreciated.

Once IRS opens in 2/12 for Efiling, the current year 2020 and 2 years prior can be Efiled. 

2017 is out of date, it must be mailed.
