can you write off anything for getting $1,500 box 1 1099-nec for a referral? phone expenses?

Unless youre in the business of referring people, this shouldnt have been reported on an NEC. It should be considered Other Income.

The new NEC form this year just made more of a mess, payers have no clue what they're doing.

    Did it go to someone who bought a system themselves?  Then it's a rebate, and not taxable.  Attach an explanation to the return.
