Filing 2026 short year return

I’ve searched and seem similar threads. I have a client that was in a partnership that terminated in the middle of 2026. So, we have a short year filing this year however the 2026 return is not available. The answer is to file an extension which will give time for the 2026 return to come out.

My question relates to filing the 2026 extension now specifically in Intuit Proconnect. I cannot create a 2026 year yet, only a new 2025 year. If I create another 2025  year for this client in Proconnect and file an extension, does that work? Or what are the steps I should follow for the 2026 extension filing?

Thanks for your help!

The easy way is to fill out a 7004 manually with the 2026 SY dates and mail it.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

Thank you, that is what I was thinking. Also, I recognize your username from TaxProTalk. Thank you for your input and sharing on that forum, your responses have helped me on various threads there as well!
