Lacerte won't let me into a return because it thinks it's in use by me. Clearly it's not. How do I "unlock" it so I can get back in?

Have you rebooted?  That quite often solves a multitude of issues.

OR, use task manager to delete all Lacerte processes running, and restart the program.
