if i stop using lacerte can i access the returns for my required retention period

Only if you pay the annual FastPath charge. Best practice is to print to PDF; that’s the case even if you plan to renew Lacerte.

wow, so in terms of retiring i have to pdf seven years and store the harddrive.  wow.

The IRS only requires that you keep a list of the returns, not the returns themselves, and the retention period is 3 years. Surely you’ve kept some sort of backup file copy of the return contemporaneously, if you’ve felt the need to keep more than the IRS minimum? Imagine if a natural disaster destroyed your computer!

 

Don’t forget that the e-file paperwork also has a 3-year retention period. Personally, I just toss them in a filing cabinet and shred the oldest stack as they expire.

oregon CPA ethics is a seven year retention.  I have paper files, and am scanning workpapers and will pdf onto hardrive the returns.
