Question

When one bank deposit matches multiple ledger transactions

I'm curious how others handle this type of reconciliation situation.

A bank statement shows one deposit for $14,200.

When I look at the accounting records, there isn't a single $14,200 transaction. Instead, I find:

  • $5,000

  • $5,200

  • $4,000

Together, they equal $14,200.

The issue is that a straightforward exact-amount match won't identify any of them because none of the individual transactions matches the bank amount.

This seems like a fairly common 1-to-many reconciliation situation: one bank transaction represents multiple accounting transactions.

How do you typically handle these during reconciliation?

Do you:

  • Manually identify the related transactions?

  • Use an aggregation/grouping approach?

  • Rely on matching by amount + date + description?

  • Have a workflow that automatically surfaces possible combinations for review?

I'm particularly interested in how people handle this when there are thousands of transactions and you don't want to manually test every possible combination.
