How to resolve ProSeries 2024 download problem?

dpmaupincpa
Level 3

I've been using ProSeries on standalone computer for several years.  Last year I downloaded ProSeries 2023 software without any issues on the same computer I am trying to download the 2024 software.  I keep getting the message that ProSeries can't be installed on this computer because the computer system is not at least windows 10.  I had previously been on Windows 10 Home, so I downloaded Windows 10 Pro to see if that would resolve the issue, but it did not.  ProSeries tech said it was problem with my computer, however I have not had any issues elsewhere.  I was able to download and upgrade to Windown 10 Pro without any issues and all my other applications requiring internet services are working fine.  Any suggestions?  Thank you.

Sadly, you'll probably need to call tech support, but first be sure youve installed all Windows updates and restarted the computer since the update happened.  And you need Win10 64bit, not the older 32bit version, so that may be something to check..

Heres the link to the system requirements, make sure you meet the minimums

You want to make sure you have a full OEM licensed version of windows 10 PRO, and not a partial copy.

Run or paste this command and hit Enter:

slmgr.vbs /dlv

On the resulting dialog, under Name you will see the Edition of Windows 10 and under Description, you will see if that is a genuine Retail license, an OEM license or a Volume license. You don't want a volume copy.

I have had the same issue....., The support from Intuit told me that I have to update Microsoft 24H2 to the new Oct 24 updates - this update caused endless problems.  Many people have had issues with updates causing internet, gaming, and other hiccups.  I ended up spending 36 with 8 Microsoft chat supports; each one started from restore, and each restart takes you to the new person, then here we go again, a circular motion.  Update stuck at 14% then again on 46% hours on end.

I finally got elevated to a tech guy who did not ghost on me when I said update issues with 24H2, he said that my C drive operation system D... folder something (can't remember)  was 100% full so it would not allow any program updates.  It has over 700k files from all the calls, and nobody cleaned it up.  Surprisingly one drive also used a lot of memory.  The cleanup took another 2 hours, and the update still stuck at 46%, so I reached back again to chat, this one started to restore even after I said "Please do not recreate the restore point and restart, I have had 7 so far the program is clean,,,," so I close the chat.  It's Xmas eve and I was ready to buy a new PC from Costco,  Just wanted to give it the shot at the last minute, this time my Proseries went through.

I feel that Proseries's error message was wrong, the support should not recommend us to update 24H2 - A Big no no....  I was forced to pay upgrade for hotmail even though my Outlook has plenty of storage left.  I was going to upgrade like you did because mine was 2019 student, but it was not necessary in the end.

My thought after 36 hours with Microsoft chat service is that perhaps Microsoft updates clocked in so many files that we never dare to clean up without guidance from tech support,  This over the years is blocking the C drive, it looks like Proseries is reading the old updates info (Microsoft 10 -2016 for mine) but not the new updates in our system (we both have Microsoft 11).  I don't know why but installing 24H2 updates get you nowhere.  Proseries also gave me a few more error messages like Quickbook and/or Proseries 23 is on,- but it's not.  However,  it is doing something in the task manager; so I have to go to task manager to disable the app, I am blocking all Microsoft updates from now on until the end of the season.

So mine is fixed on Xmas even at 6 pm - for now.... I hope Proseries is not going to give us any more trouble with future updates.

Wish you luck.

I'm on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, which is acceptable for ProSeries.  I've also check my computer for all the other ProSeries requirements (CPU, RAM, hard drive space, etc.) and my computer meets or exceeds the recommended requirements of ProSeries.  So, I'm at a loss at to know what to do next.  I'm able to download the ProSeries CoreInstallerTY24.exe file to my computer, but cannot get the software to install on my computer when running the exe file.  Hopefully, ProSeries/Intuit has a solution to this issue I'm having.

Did you let the software use default locations or did you change the default ? I have always used default, and have heard of quite a few problems over the years from people that change the default. I can't think of any other solution, so you will have to depend on support.

Try enabling administrator account.

Enable Administrator Account
1. Press Windows + R keys to open Run.
2. Type lusrmgr.msc in the dialog box and press Enter.
3. Double click on Users, and double click on Administrator.
4. Remove the checkmark "Account is disabled".

BTY My above-mentioned C drive folder (DD... something)is not the regular folder that we can see, I think (?) only Microsoft 2nd-level tech guys are allowed to have access to this operating program and update folder in the C drive because he took me to somewhere that’s unfamiliar to me.  All of my other folders were fine except for this particular folder reaching 100% capacity from various updates. After 2 hours of cleanup, all of my prior update files were gone - even Microsoft 10 update files. Fortunately, I was able to download Proseries 24 without updating Microsoft 24H2. My computer is stuck at 46% for 24H2 so  I cancel the updates and block all future updates from Microsoft.

Thank you for your replies, Charminwu and Terry53029.  I tried doing all that has been suggested, the latest being removing the checkmark "Account is disabled" by running lusrmgr.msc. Restarted the computer and tried to download ProSeries 2024 both from MyAccount and from ProSeries 2023 without success.  When trying to download next year's ProSeries from ProSeries 2023 I get the message that "The download has been completed previously. ProSeries will now install your ProSeries product for Tax Year 2024", I click OK, I am then asked "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?", I click "Yes" to run the Self-Extractor, I see ProSeries acting as if it is installing and process proceeds to 100% after showing Ready to install ProSeries, then nothing happens except ProSeries 2023 is closed out.  So, thus far I have:

  1. Upgraded to Windows 10 Pro
  2. Updated Windows 10 Pro
  3. Ran sfc /scannow command (takes awhile)
  4. Restarted computer numerous times
  5. Tried running CoreInstallerTY24 numerous times
  6. Message continues to be ProSeries can't be installed on computer because system is not at least windows 10 or 64 bit.
  7. Removing the checkmark “Account is disabled” by running lusrmgr.msc.
  8. I'll keep trying.  Hopefully, a ProSeries tech will be able to resolve the problem I am having.

@dpmaupincpa Can you check if the installer is launching in compatibility mode? Right click on the installer exe that you have downloaded and select Properties. Go to Compatibility Tab and see if Compatibility mode option is checked. If yes, can you uncheck that and try? See attached screenshot.

My problem was fixed after Microsoft level 2 tech support cleared 750k files built up in my C: folder  DDR from all the restores and updates.  I did not have to update Microsoft 24H2 to install Proseries!  I think Proseries’s error message was misleading because it leads to wrong conclusion; however, I am not a tech guy so I am leaving this to specialist like you and/or software engineers to work it out.

Thanks for your help

Hello, cdgbaker. I have yet to be able to download ProSeries 2024 to my computer.  I've used the ProSeries product for about 20 years and have never had this issue.  My computer meets or exceeds all of the requirements for using ProSeries 2024.  The closest I've come to downloading the product was to restart my computer in Safe Mode with Networking (holding down on the shift key while selecting restart).  The download gets about 98% complete and then stops and give the message that there was a problem installing Entitlement Client and error code 1601.  The download does result in the creation of a ProWin24 folder with most of the needed files.  I tried clicking on the protax24.exe file underneath the 32bit folder to try and start the program but got an error in UpdateZilla, missing C:\ProWin24\31bit\Updater\ProPrd24.INI and a message that ProSeries is unable to access or locate the 'Common' files folder.  I been tryin to download the program (stand alone version) since before Christmas without any success and no one at Intuit has been able to resolve.

Thank your for the reply, Isham.  I followed your instruction to repair or install the Intuit Entitlement Client.  It ran but did not have an option to repair or remove.  After running the entitlement client setup wizard, the only way I could try to open ProSeries was to double-click on the protax24.exe application file under the 32bit folder. The execution of this file went as far as asking for my customer number and zip code and confirmation of contact information, but ultimately resulted in receiving the message that there is an error in UpdateZilla, missing C:\ProWin24\31bit\Updater\ProPrd24.INI and a message that ProSeries is unable to access or locate the 'Common' files folder.  Are you able to send me the ProPrd24.INI file that I can save under the 32bit folder?

@dpmaupincpa Thanks for the update. All the ini files that needs to be in C:\ProWin24\32bit\Updater\ should be also present in C:\ProWin24\32bit\ which is just one folder up from the Updater. You can copy the files from there. You will also find an exe ProSeriesUpdaterStub.exe in C:\ProWin24\32bit\. As an alternative, launching this should also copy the necessary INI files to the required folder.  Please try these and let me know.

Below files should be present in both folders.

 Categories.ini, PrdVersion.ini, ProPrd24.ini, ProPrdList24.ini, ProWin24.ini.

Thank you, Isham.  The following .ini files were present in C:\ProWin24\32bit\ and I copied into C:\ProWin24\32bit\Updater\ folder: PrdVersion.ini, ProPrd24.ini and ProPrdList24.ini.  The following .ini files were not present in either of the two folders: Categories.ini and ProWin24.ini.  I tried launching ProSeriesUpdaterStub.exe after copying the above three .ini files into the Updater folder but nothing happened.  I then tried launching the file protax24.exe under C:\ProWin24\32bit\ folder but got the message "ProSeries is unable to access or locate the 'Common' files folder: Empty."  How can I get the Categories.ini and ProWin24.ini files on my computer?

@dpmaupincpa Ideally the ProWin24.ini should be present. Since its missing, thats exactly whats leading to the common files error. Can you try running the ProSeries installer again without removing anything? That should help recreate the missing files hopefully.

After two weeks of trying to resolve the ProSeries 2024 download issue without success, I made the plunge and bought a new computer with Windows 11 Home installed, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB Storage, and Intel i7 13th Generation which was an upgrade from Windows 10 PRO, 12 GB RAM, 1 TB Storage and Intel i7 6th Generation.  I had no problems installing ProSeries 2024 on the new computer. 🙂

Buying a new computer is a bit drastic and may not be economically feasible for everyone.  Glad it worked for you.

However, we should not have to purchase a new computer to download the 2024 Pro Series software when our current computer system meets the requirements. Technical support should find a way to make the download work or possibly lose customers.

I was disconnected today when waiting for assistance.  I will try again on Monday when I have a lot of time to be on the phone waiting for a sloution.

That vcredist_x86.exe error is an issue with a Windows file, not the tax software, I doubt Intuit will be able to help fix

FWIW 12M of RAM is a weird amount (normally you see it in 8, 16, 32), and oddly enough the same amount as the other person in this thread that had an issue with installation.  I wonder if  hardware incompatibility has anything to do with this.  @Intuit_Isham  @IntuitParmanand  has this been considered at all?

I did everything I thought might work to get ProSeries 2024 Pro (Standalone) to download for over two weeks. Trying the download on a new computer was not what I wanted to do, considering my computer met or exceeded the ProSeries requirements.  But it worked and I'm thankful for that and the fact that I got 7+ years out of my old computer, which I can still use for other purposes.  I was very pleased with Intuit's efforts to help me. On three different dates a different Intuit agent spent over an hour trying to help me get the program to download.  On another date another agent spend an hour and 58 minutes trying to help me and still another agent spent 47 minutes on another date trying to help me.  Each of the agents were very professional and in my opinion did everything they could to try to get the program to download.  The closest I got was trying to download in Safe Mode with Networking and got about 98 percent completed before erroring out on a Client Entitlement Error #1601.  Most of the agents were able to see what I was doing by launching the SmartLook feature on ProSeries 2023 and one agent used GlanceGuestSetup to view my computer and steps taken to try to resolve. It would have been nice to know exactly what was causing the download issue, but it wasn't for lack of effort by Intuit agents.  I was also appreciative of those in the Intuit Community like yourself in offering suggestions to try and resolve the issue.  I've been reading a book called "The Obstacle is the Way" that I would recommend for all.  It encouraged me while trying to resolve the ProSeries download obstacle; particularly the chapter titled "Practice Persistence". I hope you are able to resolve your download issue soon.
