Question

Indiana Amended IT-40

The instructions tell me to uncheck Indiana for state electronic filing in the federal information worksheet. That does allow the Indiana amended return to show in the EF section and it removes the error message. However, the IT-8879 is blank (its blank even if I check the state electronic filing box in the federal information worksheet and have the error message in the Indiana return). I was under the impression I needed a new IT-8879 for the Indiana amended IT-40? Is that wrong? If it is not wrong how do I get that to fill in so I can get the taxpayers to sign it,

IN does want signatures for transmission of each return showing the client and tax professional have agreed on the numbers.

On the IN Information Worksheet, scroll down to Part VI electronic filing information. Be sure the box is checked for the amended to be filed electronically.

Hopefully, you are in good shape with the 8879 filled in. If not:

  • You may need to review the 8879 for errors and correct the form
  • homebase, right click for signature request -maybe that will force a reset
  • Worst case- Print 8879. You can then attach as a .pdf

Unfortunately, I do not see that as solving the problem. Yes, the amended return box for electronic filing is marked. That is due to me marking that box in the federal information worksheet. The problem I have is that the error message is stating that the state cannot be marked for electronic filing in the federal information worksheet. I have tried all the combinations. The only thing that works is to not mark the Indiana return as amended. Then the IT-8879 fills in. As soon as I mark it as an amended return, the IT-8879 goes blank. I need the IT-8879 (I cannot fill it in myself) in order for the client to sign and date. It appears that ProSeries professional does not allow electronic filing of an amended Indiana return, but that state is on the allowed list for filing state amended returns in the federal information worksheet. This is a 2024 return, so it should qualify.

You must change the signature date in the program. It must be updated to the current year. Here are some things to check. Mind you, when you change the date in the program to the current year, the program will file the forms needed using the old signatures and new date. The new 8879 is for your protection that the clients agree to the changes.

Be sure you have run updates for the prior year and are fully up to date.

In Part VII of the federal information worksheet, when you check the box to file amended state return, a dropdown appears with the states that will allow e-filing for that year. If the state is listed, it can be e-filed. You are correct that your state is there and should be filing. The link above with things to check should get you filing. If it is not listed, then paper file is the only option.
