Can a win loss statement from the casino be used to prove gambling losses?  Client won a total of approximately $125,000 at various times throughout the year and her win loss statement shows winnings of approximately $75,000.  This means she lost $50,000.  Can i use the win loss statement for the gambling loss on Sch A?

I’m not sure exactly what the casino is providing, but the couple of slot machine addict clients I have bring in statements from the casino showing cash in and cash out.  I do rely on those for their tax returns.

You can use the statement from casino as a secondary record of proof, but IRS also requires you to have a detailed       contemporaneous log as your primary source of proof. In 2026 you can only claim 90% of losses. Remember  the proof only matters if you are audited, so you may get away with whatever proof you relay on a couple of years, but is it worth it if you get audited, and they look at past several years.

So you are saying the IRS would put more reliance on a client keeping a notebook saying I dumped $5,000 into a slot machine every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday during the year and only won $12, vs a computerized report generated by a casino showing every penny that went into a slot machine and every penny that came out? 😯

Note to self:  ignore posts with more than 5 replies.  After that we are back to playing hide and seek to find where the replies are hiding.   I bought some ruby red slippers on ebay and I have been clicking my heels three times repeating “there is no place like home”.  Unfortunately I don’t wake up back home.  Instead I wake up here worried about flying monkeys and whatever else we are going to encounter here.

Are we sure it’s 5?  Might be more like 3.
