Question

name format on state forms

The correct first name has two names, no hyphen, no middle initial.  On the federal form it prints correctly.  On the state forms it prints the second name as the middle.  For example not using the actual name:

Marry Anne Jones with Marry Anne as the first name.

State forms will print as Marry A showing A in the middle initial box.

How to fix with keeping a space in the first name?

Give up and move on. As the parent of someone with a very non-standard name format, I can attest to “I’m so sorry, but the computer is doing that on its own, and all the fixes will make your name wrong somewhere else” as an explanation to embrace.

This particular thing has to do with state formatting requirements, and the state chooses not to support a space in the middle of first names.
