Amended Return

I am attempting to backup the original e-filed return in order to begin preparation of an amended return.  However, the program is not allowing me to backup the original return.  The function under client maintenance is grayed out.  Any help?

Open the return, then save it with a different tag.  If it's Smit1234, I save it as SmithAmend.  You can use more than 8 characters, I think that system goes back to the early days of DOS.

If I amend a 2019 return that was efiled by another accountant, do I understand that I cannot efile 1040X and must mail it in?

You can't e-file it with ProSeries.  If you use other professional tax software, the IRS allows you to e-file the amended return even if you did not prepare it.  It is a restriction imposed on us by Intuit.
