Yes, you can get around the error messages by putting in a -0-. But, this also means all the completed returns with applicable 1099-R's waiting for the client to return the 8879 will now have errors so you'll have to remember to go into each one before e-filing. It's just adding another slowdown.
@dascpa My guess is that Intuit initially made an enhancement to the Turbo Tax software for the self-preparers to alert them of the RMD requirements. Then somehow Intuit thought that the tax prep pros would think that this would be a great enhancement for ProSeries too. Ah, that would be a hard no.
just check yes above the worksheet and put the full amount distributed on line A of the worksheet.
Who has time to start to decipher this. One client has 8 1099R's.
Hopefully they fix this error.

No, they would want to charge an extra fee for that. I'm thinking it was like some kind of virus that leaked out of the lab of some mad Intuit scientist. 😳
When I call PS I just want to pull my hair out. I have tried explaining issues and nobody seemed to understand. The issue is the same as last year so they did not fix it. It is with a Kansas form. I have now discovered several other issues on Kansas forms but do not want to waste my time talking to someone that has no clue.
I ran into this today too, with my clients looking over my shoulder and I was thinking "What the heck is this?" and feeling like they're thinking, "Does she know what she's doing??"
Their income is a defined benefit pension from the California State Teachers Retirement System. Nothing to do with any RMD. And though it says "If this is an RMD..." there is no place to say, "IT'S NOT!"
This needs fixing or working around ASAP.
Putting zero in required RMD amount does make the error go away. But if the document 1099-R we have in our hands says NOTHING about the RMD, we're left asking our clients to go back to their broker or pension source and ask THEM to tell them what the RMD was? They're expecting people (1) to know what their RMD was and (2) to confess to their tax preparer that they didn't take it (neither of these are going to happen). I don't have any idea what my OWN RMD is!
I've never seen these questions in ProSeries before this afternoon. This is new.
I thought you were joking about their solution until I called tech support about a different issue and was told at one point that I needed to call IRS to find the solution. The solution to their software not working properly. Insanity at it's finest.
@Michael Did Intuit Customer Support ask which software version you are using?
An Intuit ProSeries Customer Support employee referring you to the IRS sounds more like a Turbo Tax Customer Support employees must be answering the ProSeries Support phone lines this year. It would make sense that Turbo Tax Support would have a script to refer a Turbo Tax user to the IRS if they are not able to assist.
I am just putting 0 in box A "Required RMD amount" for every 1099R I enter and then the error message goes away. As someone stated earlier it is coming up for every 1099R whether it is a pension or an IRA. I
I discovered the issue today. Hello Proseries is anyone reviewing this thread? It needs to get fixed asap.
In addition to that when you skip from box 1 it doesn't go to the next entry field. It goes to the verbiage for the entry field requiring you to skip more and waste more time. Can't skip and enter with the last update on the 1099-R form as well.
Is there a time line in place to fix the latest update? Mine updates automatically.
I was going crazy because my client is receiving from a 401-A. There is no balance, he gets it until he dies. I finally lost all patience trying to figure it out and put a 0 (zero) on line A on the RMD worksheet. Now the program seems happy.
This needs to be fixed immediately! This is completely unacceptable!
The tab feature is really annoying. It doesn't go to an input box it just goes to the next field that isn't even a fillable box!!!
Just put a zero on Line A. This really isn't an issue.
That works, Frustrated, and I'm doing it, but it's not TRUE in some cases. I've never before put something on a tax return I KNEW wasn't true.
"I've never before put something on a tax return I KNEW wasn't true"
But how does that affect the bottom line on the return and do you think the IRS actually sees that information?
But that's the point. You are NOT putting it on the tax return! You are putting in the program for no apparent reason and it goes nowhere. It might go somewhere if you have a 5329 problem, but if you do then you need that info anyway. For everyone else, it goes nowhere.
Do great minds think alike? 15 seconds apart!
When will we see this removed!?
I can't finish any tax returns.
I've read them all through Thursday. Zero works like a charm. Except a bunch of these 1099-Rs ARE RMDs, including my husband's. RMD isn't zero. Neither my clients or I have a clue what it actually was last year because it's not on the 1099-R and we haven't called Schwab or Edward Jones to ask. We're all hoping (I think) that ProSeries goes "never mind" and takes that requirement off the page, but at the moment it's still there if the client has reached RMD age. If (God forbid) it's something we REALLY have to report for up-to-now-completely-unknown reasons, I've filed tax returns with a factual error, and I knew it was an error when I did it. People are jumping in my chili about making a big deal about this, but I'm not happy about doing that. I AM doing it! I just don't like it at all.
Over and out. I hope somebody waves a flag if ProSeries corrects their correction. I've said my piece and I'm going back to work. Happy tax returns to all of you.
I was going to jump in your chili until you said you had a husband. Oh well, I guess Fireball will have to do!
She must make a big batch of chili if you can jump in it. I wonder if her secret ingredient for her chili is Fireball.
@The_AntiTax_Man yes they definitely asked what version I was using, after verifying my customer ID. I was also told by one of the techs (I was passed on to another specialist) that they had sent a message to inquire about my situation and was told (by presumably a super tech?) that I would need to speak to IRS about how to handle it. I honestly can't remember all of the misinformation I received at this point, the quantity was mind blowing. The one thing I am sure of is that none of the three to five employees involved had any idea as to how the forms worked nor the rules governing their usage. |
@Michael Intuit laid off a bunch of employees last summer. They have likely hired a bunch of replacements that have less knowledge and experience. You were likely connecting with the newbies.
Chile made with Fireball??? If she makes it that way, her husband is one lucky dude!
I was thinking that Man can't live on Fireball alone, and a nice lady tax preparer who can also make chili sounds pretty enticing on a cold winter night. Oh crap, who am I kidding? Back to the Fireball. At least the Fireball doesn't constantly tell me to pick up after myself!
Encountering the same issue for 1099-R forms
Update, I received acknowledgement that IRS and state accepted return. Hopefully it satys that way. Also, claification. On the return I was preparing The man was of RMD age, but the type of retirement he receives was lifetime. I haven't done any yet who had to pay stated RMD, but I know several of my clients are going to be in that group. And no, I don't drink fireball or coffee, just powering through!
Proseries we need this fixed like FOUR DAYS AGO! Come onnnnnnnn!!!!!!
@dascpa Does PS24 require the RMD information on only the taxpayers that turned age 73 and older during 2024? Or, are you experiencing this requirement in PS24 on all 2024 Form 1099-R recipients regardless of the taxpayer's age?
I'm not seeing this PS24 Form 1099R required RMD info on taxpayers below age 73? Are you?
-------->
The age at which you must start taking RMDs increased to 73 in 2022.
If you reach age 73 in 2024, you must take your first RMD by April 1, 2025, and the second RMD by Dec. 31, 2025.
IRS has waved RMD requirements from inherited IRAs for 2024. Most nonspouse beneficiaries who inherit a traditional IRA after 2019 must deplete the account-and pay the taxes on those funds-within 10 years. For inherited IRAs, as of July 19, 2024, regulations specify that if the account holder was taking required minimum distributions (RMDs) at the time of their death, the beneficiary must continue to take annual RMDs based on the deceased's schedule until the end of the 10-year period.
I'm not sure what everyone wants fixed. There is a point to what they did, assuming you know you did not reach the RMD amount. For everyone else, meaning you know RMD is not an issue or you think RMD is not an issue, put in $0.
The program requires an entry for every 1099-R, not just those for IRAs. I have a client who receives 5 pensions -- same job for many years, the company just kept changing hands, and then the payments were farmed out to a bank trustee. We're paying for this?
