Today's Update Messed Up Every 1099-R

Yes, you can get around the error messages by putting in a -0-. But, this also means all the completed returns with applicable 1099-R's waiting for the client to return the 8879 will now have errors so you'll have to remember to go into each one before e-filing. It's just adding another slowdown.

@dascpa  My guess is that Intuit initially made an enhancement to the Turbo Tax software for the self-preparers to alert them of the RMD requirements.  Then somehow Intuit thought that the tax prep pros would think that this would be a great enhancement for ProSeries too.  Ah, that would be a hard no.

just check yes above the worksheet and put the full amount distributed on line A of the worksheet.

Who has time to start to decipher this.  One client has 8 1099R's.

Hopefully they fix this error.

No, they would want to charge an extra fee for that.  I'm thinking it was like some kind of virus that leaked out of the lab of some mad Intuit scientist. 😳

When I call PS I just want to pull my hair out.  I have tried explaining issues and nobody seemed to understand.  The issue is the same as last year so they did not fix it.  It is with a Kansas form.  I have now discovered several other issues on Kansas forms but do not want to waste my time talking to someone that has no clue.

I ran into this today too, with my clients looking over my shoulder and I was thinking "What the heck is this?" and feeling like they're thinking, "Does she know what she's doing??"

Their income is a defined benefit pension from the California State Teachers Retirement System.  Nothing to do with any RMD.  And though it says "If this is an RMD..." there is no place to say, "IT'S NOT!"

This needs fixing or working around ASAP.

Putting zero in required RMD amount does make the error go away.  But if the document 1099-R we have in our hands says NOTHING about the RMD,  we're left asking our clients to go back to their broker or pension source and ask THEM to tell them what the RMD was?   They're expecting people (1) to know what their RMD was and (2) to confess to their tax preparer that they didn't take it (neither of these are going to happen).   I don't have any idea what my OWN RMD is!

I've never seen these questions in ProSeries before this afternoon. This is new.

I thought you were joking about their solution until I called tech support about a different issue and was told at one point that I needed to call IRS to find the solution. The solution to their software not working properly. Insanity at it's finest.

@Michael  Did Intuit Customer Support ask which software version you are using?

An Intuit ProSeries Customer Support employee referring you to the IRS sounds more like a Turbo Tax Customer Support employees must be answering the ProSeries Support phone lines this year.  It would make sense that Turbo Tax Support would have a script to refer a Turbo Tax user to the IRS if they are not able to assist.

I am just putting 0 in box A "Required RMD amount" for every 1099R I enter and then the error message goes away.  As someone stated earlier it is coming up for every 1099R whether it is a pension or an IRA.  I

Did they also give you Elon Musk's phone number if you can't reach anyone at IRS?

"was told at one point that I needed to call IRS to find the solution"

That would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad 😞

I discovered the issue today.  Hello Proseries is anyone reviewing this thread?  It needs to get fixed asap.

In addition to that when you skip from box 1 it doesn't go to the next entry field.  It goes to the verbiage for the entry field requiring you to skip more and waste more time.  Can't skip and enter with the last update on the 1099-R form as well.

Is there a time line in place to fix the latest update?   Mine updates automatically.

I was going crazy because my client is receiving from a 401-A. There is no balance, he gets it until he dies. I finally lost all patience trying to figure it out and put a 0 (zero) on line A on the RMD worksheet. Now the program seems happy.

The tab feature is really annoying.  It doesn't go to an input box it just goes to the next field that isn't even a fillable box!!!

Just put a zero on Line A.  This really isn't an issue.

That works, Frustrated, and I'm doing it, but it's not TRUE in some cases.  I've never before put something on a tax return I KNEW wasn't true.

"I've never before put something on a tax return I KNEW wasn't true"

But how does that affect the bottom line on the return and do you think the IRS actually sees that information?

Slava Ukraini!

But that's the point.  You are NOT putting it on the tax return!  You are putting in the program for no apparent reason and it goes nowhere.  It might go somewhere if you have a 5329 problem, but if you do then you need that info anyway.  For everyone else, it goes nowhere.

Do great minds think alike?  15 seconds apart!

And sometimes not so great minds think alike 😁
