with 1 child is it possible for married filing separately give you a larger credit than married filing jointly

The point is why don't you try it and see how much more it gives you.  The tax credit is not bigger, its just that MFS you only have to list half of the advance tax credit received because the IRS split the advance in half to each parent.  Just have to make sure you don't lose other benefits filing that way.
