Updated servers, can we change the path instead of uninstalling workstations?

Hi all,

We just recently moved to a new server on our network.  I wanted to know if there is a way to change the data path to the new server or if I need to uninstall and reinstall all of the workstations?  Thanks for any assistance!

How do I move ProSeries Network data files to a new server?

Here are some steps to migrate data files to a new server in ProSeries Professional:
  1. Back up the client data and other files and folders from the old computer.
  2. Restore the prior-year client data to the new computer.
  3. Restore the prior-year recommended files to the new computer.
  4. Update e-file acknowledgements.

To automate the move process, the ProSeries Backup Utility can be used if default file and folder paths are used. To manually back up data, these steps can be followed:
  1. Open ProSeries.
  2. Select the clients to back up.

Data can also be downloaded and transferred in ProSeries Professional by following these steps:
  1. Go to the HomeBase View screen.
  2. Select the Import menu, then Client Data Conversion.
  3. Select Download Converted Client Data.
  4. Sign in with the user ID and password.
  5. In the Download Converted Data pop-up, select the batch to download.
  6. Select Download.
  7. Select Done to close the Tax Data Conversion Wizard.

Aimee,

I'm not sure if you upgraded the hardware and software for both servers and client workstations but from past experience....back-up and restore was essential to retaining the efiling information on each client file.  So if you did a clean install on the server and are now reinstalling the PS admin install there, you'll want to do the back-up (from the old server) and restore (to the new server) for the client files....from there, the workstations configurations will likely need to match those of the server so a clean install on the server will likely require a reinstall on each workstation.  [In short, there are number of configurations in the config file that need to match between server and client workstations - at least that was our experience a few years ago.  It used to be that you could redirect paths in the config file....I think those days are gone due to current complexity of the config files.]  Needless to say, ask tech support.  Hope it helps.

Thank you all.  Turns out that you can reinstall ProSeries over top of your currently installed versions and it will update everything to the new server.  It was pretty easy.
