Stimulus Checks

A 20 yrs old was claims on parents 2019 tax return so the parents did not get the stimulus for her.  For 2020 the 20 yr old is not a dependent and is therefore completing her own tax return.  Per the tax return she is allowed the $1800 since it was not received for 2019.  Is this correct?

If you're confident that the 20 year old does not qualify as a dependent any longer, then yes, thats correct.

Yes, if she became "independent" in 2020, then she is entitled to both stimulus funds if she files claiming herself in 2020. File it on her 2020 Form 1040.

There are a lot of folks that are going to decide that their kids are no longer dependents this year so that the kids qualify for the credit.  Just because the client says that doesn't mean it is necessarily true.  We all need to do some extra homework this year to sort out fact from fiction as to whether or not kids are covering more than half of their own support.

I 100% agree.  Even though she lives with a parent her income was almost $30k.  I do believe she would be considered an independent.
