ILLINOIS CR - DOES FULL YEAR IL RESIDENT GET ILLINOIS CREDIT FOR TAXES PAID TO MS WHEN THERE IS NO ILLINOIS INCOME

Taxpayers lived in Illinois the entire year of 2024. Filing status MFS.  Spouse W2 State of employment is MS although both lived in IL the entire year.  If I complete an IL CR form taxpayer will owe $980. She did not have any IL income. Is IL 1040 an IL CR forms still required for filing. I think I am missing something,

If your client is a full year resident he/she will get a credit for income that was taxed on the same income in both states. Your client will be taxed on world wide income in resident state, and also taxed on income earned in nonresident state. Your client will be eligible to claim IL credit for tax paid to her nonresident state

Not enough info to answer specifically but I agree with Terry53029 about the credit for taxes paid to another state.  However, without knowing your client's income, it is possible to owe IL because IL tax rate is higher than MS tax rate, meaning even with the credit to MS, your client will still owe more to IL.  Is it $980?  Depends on your clients income.

What I don't get is Illinois starts out not taxing lets say rental income in Iowa.  You have to go into Schedule CR and tell the program that it is also taxed in Illinois.  It does give the Iowa credit for tax on the Iowa farm rental.  But it is backward, it should always assume taxable in home state.
