Form 8915

Does somebody know how to reach an Intuit employee to explain why they keep postponing the release of the form 8915. I woke up today and now they said it is for March 9. Until yesterday it was for March March 3. I would like to know what is the reason for the delay since the form was first introduced last year. What are all these programming engineers doing all day long. This year, there are not too  many changes for them to take this long? Have a nice day everybody.

Would be nice to have a hard date for our clients and an explanation for them

Lets just keep this info between you and me.  There are alot more suicidal people out there waiting for this 8915 form.  It will come when it is ready.  No amount of Fireball will accelerate that coming.

My prediction:  Intuit will not finalize the form until after the IRS finalizes the instructions.

So when the file in this link (currently showing a Feb 2022 revision date at the top):

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i8915f.pdf

suddenly looks like the file in this link (currently showing a Jan 2023 revision date at the top):

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-dft/i8915f--dft.pdf

then Intuit will start working on it (and probably release it the following Thursday).

UPDATE 3/1/23:  The IRS just released a BRAND NEW DRAFT of Form 8915-F yesterday:

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-dft/f8915f--dft.pdf

I haven't compared it to the current version but here's the link in case someone who cares wants to:

No amount of Fireball will sooth this problem but we can try and use it anyway.

Are you saying that the IRS is behind this boondagle and not Intuit?

We all know that this is not our fault but try and explain this to our clients. They are not dealing with the irs or Intuit but with us.

I'll let you reach your own conclusions.  Clearly the IRS is still tinkering with both the form and the instructions (which are both in draft form).  Intuit has a history of not finalizing a form until both the form and the instructions are released by the IRS.

If I had a dog in this race, at this point I'd start considering Lisa's approach of attaching a PDF.  I think that's the only option if you have a farmer's return due today.

Besides not being computer Illiterate enough to know how to attach a pdf how do you delete the current form 8915F that says do not file from the tax return? Pro basic does not allow it to delete and as along as that form is part of the tax return we will not be able to eFile.

I think @Just-Lisa-Now- posted instructions in an earlier post.

My guess is you remove the 8915F entirely and just override the taxable pension/IRA on the 1040.

Edit: Here's a recent Lisa post:

Which links to an older post for the prior year work-around:

Today it says March 9th. For one thing or another INTUIT fails something every year. I bet other software have come up with a resolution.

Thats the problem. At least with pro basic if you press the button to remove form  8915F from the form 1040 it still remains. I am planning to retire after the 2024 icome tax season. But if this was not the third year and I thought we would have to deal with 8915F again next year April 18th 2023 would be my retirement date. Screw the extensions.

Normally forms "respawn" in PS when there's a carryover number somewhere that feeds into them.  I don't know how PS handles the 3-year spread but you likely have to search and destroy that carryover before you can remove the 8915F.

are probably right but after last ta season I looked into other software and while I found that some software did not have a problem with 8915F they had other problems. So by switching frfom intuit to some other software all you would be doing is trading one problem for another.

They killed off the splash screen twins and things were starting to get really boring around here.  Good thing the good old 8915 is still around to keep this place exciting 😜

You might not care about the detail, but since you asked... one thing I see is, apparently there are some issues with disaster codes as listed in 8915-F instructions Appendix B. This traces back to FEMA listings.

"There are several disasters listed on Form 8915-F Appendix B Instructions that do not follow the format of element  'FEMADisasterDeclarationNum'.  For example: Severe Storms, Flooding, Landslides and Mudslides in Alaska is shown on Appendix B as (4585-DR-AK)"

"The example needs to be written out on schema as DR-4585-AK. Schema will be updated in Processing Year 2024/Tax year 2023."

I call my local Liberty Tax Service and they said they use Drake and their 8915-F was ready to electronic file.  So this is an Intuit problem again.  Drake had that form ready by late February last year too. My friend used Tax Cut and she said her's was not ready either.

That is exactly what must be done.
