Can you elect S Corp status for Federal and not state?

CA SMLLC has elected S Corp status for Federal.  CA S Corp return must then be filed, correct?  Or can the CA LLC return still be filed (not electing S corp status for state).  I am thinking state has to conform with the federal election but wanted anyone with state expertise to confirm.

Thank you.

CA conforms to federal S status.

I believe there are only a couple of states where you make a separate S election. NJ is one.

The more I know, the more I don't know.
