TP received 2022 1099R in deceased spouse's name only. Spouse passed in 2021.
How to proceed?

If the spouse got the money in 2022, the spouse pays tax on it. IRS is not going to complain if it is reported on the survivor's 2022 tax return. Requesting a corrected 1099R is unnecessary, unless there was tax withheld that the spouse wants to claim (like, more than $5).
Is the SSN the spouse or the TP? What is the code in Box 7? The income may belong to the TP, if all the above belong to the spouse and the TP received the income..ask for a corrected 1099-R
Have the client get a corrected 1099 from the issuer that shows the right SSN.

Bob...I agree, if the spouse is doing a MFJ for 2022, if not the IRS will likely question where the 2022 return is for the deceased spouse. Having the 1099 corrected will eliminate this headache.
