I don't dabble much in this area, but why not report the health care account proceeds as income?

I'm also in the "don't dabble much" club on this.  Retirees I've seen who still get health coverage get either a W-2 or 1099 each year for their benefits.  Are there any income documents from either the former employer or perhaps a union?  I've had a few of these convoluted situations where I've had to follow the money from 1099 to the bank account and everything in between.
