Hello

I have individual returns from prior years for two clients. They are now married. Can I merge the two returns

Nope..

Pick the most difficult one, then add the info from the 'less difficult' return.

Pick the one most likely to stay with you after the split.  Usually the one who's been with you longer.

If the most difficult one is the female, do I leave her as the taxpayer and add her husband as the spouse or can I switch the names in her file?

The IRS doesn't care if the chick or the dude is listed first.  IF you do switch, TRIPLE check everything to make sure the T & S assignments are correct (W-2's, Sch C, E or F, carryovers...).
