I completed my clients taxes about a month ago and they just called to let me know that the IRS and New York state is saying they don't have a tax bill. I do not believe there were any errors on my part. How can the client pay his tax bill?

What does this mean? Did they get letters from both IRS and NY? Does the tax return show a balance due or a refund?
