So, any idea on whether the states are going to update as well, or should preparers amend states only???

Each state would make its own decision on that.  I haven't heard of any with plans to automatically amend.

We have to check with the states we're filing with.

Most of my clients are in Oregon and they are doing as IRS is and recalculating and issuing refunds or reducing taxes due.

I'm still recalculating those returns to make sure those affected clients get what they are entitled to.

Of course Oregon has a good reason to track those federal refunds because they can tax them -- let's see, will it be on the amended 2020 return, or next year?
