I efiled a 2021 return in 2022 that I have the Submission ID for and my client received a letter from the IRS last year stating they did not file 2021. We had to send in a paper copy.
I now have a different client that I efiled his 2022 return in 2023 that I also have the Submission ID for that just received a letter from the IRS stating that they did not file 2022.
In both cases we checked their IRS accounts and sure enough it showed that they did not file.
Are other people experiencing this problem? How is this happening?
I have not experienced this. Youre sure the returns werent rejected? A rejected return would still have a submission ID.
Highlight the client in the EFClients list and hit F12, look at the Efiling history, make sure they show as accepted.
I also have never experienced that. I assume you have the #9325. Have you checked the E-File center to see if it shows accepted, and not rejected ?
Yes, it shows accepted.
Yes, I have a #9325 and it shows accepted.
Are the EIN/SSN correct?
I guess transmission hiccups can happen. I know Ive had IRS request forms they say are missing from an EFiled return, that are very clearly included, but somehow they disappeared in electronic transit.
I assume this is for a 1040 filing - If yes, then it is possible that the IRS sent the client a identity verification letter that needs to be addressed before the IRS will actually process the return. Until the IRS gets a response to the verification letter the 1040 filing will appear as not filed.
Hope this helps.
Ohhh, youre right. I forgot about that, when an ID verification letter goes out the return sits in some weird error limbo state and they have no record of it being filed.
