Is there any way on the 2020 return to indicate a taxpayer is in the Hurricane Ida area showing the Jan 3 extension.

No. The IRS will do it themselves based on your location (zip code) and will automatically apply it to the affected areas.

remember Efiling will close in a few weeks and wont open for 1040s until the end of Jan 2022 (maybe?)...so if you want to Efile that return before the Jan 3rd due date, you need to get it filed before the shut down.

Here are the instructions from IRS:

The IRS automatically provides filing and penalty relief to any taxpayer with an IRS address of record located in the disaster area. Therefore, taxpayers do not need to contact the agency to get this relief. However, if an affected taxpayer receives a late filing or late payment penalty notice from the IRS that has an original or extended filing, payment or deposit due date falling within the postponement period, the taxpayer should call the number on the notice to have the penalty abated.
