If a 1099R was issued to her, she claims it on her return. If a 1099R was issued to dad, it goes on his return.

We have a tax on income, not pieces of paper. Who got the money? The "4" may mean it was a survivor pension paid to him. But if the 1099 has her name and SSN, that's a clue that the check was payable to her also.
Thanks for the reply. just to be clear, since taxpayer claims deceased parent on her tax return as a dependent, and the 1099r's received are in his social security number, taxpayer stated that she used this money for his burial. Should she claim this on her tax return and still claim him as a dependent or do a completely new one for deceased parent.
No, it doesnt go on her return. How much did he get? Does he still qualify as a dependent?
A return has to be filed if income issued under HIS Social Security Number (assuming certain facts; how much, etc...). You seldom report a dependent's income on anything other than the dependent's ITR (Kiddie tax being one exception).
(edit, to clarify - the income SHOULD be on the return filed using the SSN on the form.)
I'm just curious why the Dad is getting a F 1099-R coded as 4 (death). Is this the first year he received it? Who died & left it to him?
NMI
It doesn't matter whose SSN is on the form, if the money was paid to her after his death. Is this the remaining amount in an IRA, by any chance? How much was it, anyway? Enough that if it's taxable to him, she can't claim him as a dependent?
If the money didn't go to him before his death, you don't need to file a return for him. Don't be OCD about IRS matching it up with his nonfiling status and sending a CP 2501 next year. They might not even be around then, and was it really more than $20,000, to generate enough tax to worry about?
It was 11am here when you posted that. Not sure where OP lives, but some people are in church at that hour.
Of course, nothing prevents them from checking for messages during the boring moments.
