Hi,
I am working on filing the 2020 tax return for client (Parent 1) who is not married and has a child with (Parent 2). The child was born in 2020, can both parents claim the Recovery rebate for the following (EIP #1 $500 and EIP #2 $600). Parent 2 has already filed their 2020 return and claimed the child as dependent and got the EIP payments for the child as well.
I've been looking all over and can not find a straight answer.
Thanks in advance.

Whomever claims the child on the 2020 return, gets the RRC for that child.
The child has to be a dependent on the tax return to pick up the Recovery Rebate Credit for the new child.
If parent #2 already filed the child as a dependent, then parent #1 should not unless parent #2 did so illegally. Then parent #1 would mail in the tax return and let the IRS reach out for proof of who had the child the majority of the time or any other tie-breakers for parents that do not agree.

Think it through; of course not.
