What is the filing status for tax year 2017 when taxpayers spouse passed away in March 2017.?

MFS (or HoH, if eligible) unless executor/administrator elects with the surviving spouse to file jointly with respect to the decedent spouse.  MFJ is not allowed, however, if surviving spouse remarried before the end of 2017.
