No. The Federal return would have to be e-filed when sending NY.

NY is an independent state. You can efile it by itself..... actually, you're required to efile it.

............ I think you can file any state without the federal... NY and NJ definitely work

CA works alone  too...but if you transmit along with the fed and fed gets rejected....CA will reject as well....kind of weird.

Let me check again on this, hands down, 100% it is able to be e-filed out of Lacerte without Federal, however, I was informed that NY requires the Federal Copy to be sent and that ProSeries does not do this like Lacerte does. I will get back to you shortly.

For ProSeries there are certain situations where NY will not e-file without Federal. If you do the Final review and there are no errors and transmits without errors, then it can be e-filed. If it gives an error, then Federal would have to be sent with it. We tested a simple 1040 with NY and it was sent.

While you're at it please find out when they're going to fix the "duplicate client' restrictions so that you can have more than one client file w/ same SSN and transmit the one that you need. The way it stands now you have to delete one duplicate client entirely to transmit the other. It is a horrible workflow and easily remedied.

@Just £isa Now!   NJ & NY will go through if the Fed rejects. Think I'd rather have them both reject (for those times when a dependents SSN has previously been used.... etc..... Saves having to file amendments.

CA seems to reject anytime the fed rejects as long as I transmit them together....I haven't had any with incorrect dep SSNs though....Ive only had rejects for finger flubbing a W2 or 1099R EIN.

There is mortgage interest paid to a foreign bank which makes the federal return ineligible for e-file since there are errors for no FEIN or zip code.  I removed the bank and address info which removes the errors which allows me to e-file NY state.  I assume this information is not important to the state.

@Factswrite ... to the best of my knowledge, 1098 info is not required. @Just £isa Now! .... patience... it's inevitable.

Ive never entered the bank info for a 1098 either, just the dollar amount.

@Skylane - What me worry?  yes, I did get a reject today, new client I missed the 5405 payback!  I jinxed myself!
