How to Resolve E-File Reject Code F2441-996

Remle
Level 2

MFS with 2 kids return rejected with F2441-996 error code.  Parents live together and filed with both children as dependents. 1 child had child care expense. e-file rejected with Error code F2441-996 says  IP-PIN provided on form 2441 is not valid. Child does not have IP-PIN. I see where there is a place to input one on dependent worksheet, but he does not have one. I input a digit on the IP-PIN field and deleted to make sure there was no phantom # in the field. Not sure what to do to get this return thru e-file. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi @Remle Thanks for posting about the rejection. This rejection usually means the IRS thinks an IP PIN is required, even if one wasn’t entered. We recommend checking the IRS site to confirm whether an IP PIN was issued for the child and retrieve it if needed:

Retrieve your identity protection PIN (IP PIN)

If the IRS shows no IP PIN and the reject continues, the return may need to be paper-filed.

Thanks for response. Client was finally able to get thru to IRS and after 2 hours IRS confirmed that someone tried to use the dependent's SS # back in 2022! IRS issued an IP-PIN for 2025 tax year.

Since the client did not receive or did not realize they had received the letter, will wait 3 weeks to receive in the mail. Should still be faster than paper mailing the return. : )
