Hi, I have a decedent who died in Feb. 2021, so his 706 or extension is due in November 2021 yet the 706 in ProSeries (TY 2020) gives me errors that it cannot be used because he did not die in 2020! What to do?

Timing seems to be an issue with these.....looks like you can just mail in an extension, if the IRS website doesn't have the 2021 available, can't you just use a sharpie and fix the 2020? Not sure you have many other options.

1) Wait till 10/1/21 and see if the program is updated. The form hasn't changed since 2019.
2) Fill it out with a 12/31/20 date of death, then override before printing it. Or use the online pdf for the first page.
Thanks, I'll wait a while longer and if necessary do a manual extension but this is ridiculous.
This is the situation every year with Form 706.
That is a totally inadequate response to a valid question. We are paying Intuit for the ability to create tax returns for clients, they should be able to provide forms in a timely manner to meet the deadlines the IRS imposes.
You want a 2021 form/return. The 2021 software is just being released now. You have to wait.
File the extension. It has to be done on paper anyway.
IRS didn't change the form, but updated the instructions in September. The major change was for the amounts indexed to inflation. Those had already been announced elsewhere, but Intuit likes to follow instructions (and probably knew the update was coming).
Let us know when you find a software provider that delivers 706 software faster.
