Quick question: Taxpayer W-2 shows code W for $2880 for (HSA) Do I still need to report the 1099-SA gross distribution on his tax return?

Yes.

The "W' on the W-2 is for contributions; which has nothing to do with distributions.

Well, I guess is sorta/kinda does since without some contributions along the way there couldn't BE any distributions 😉

If you don't, the IRS will send a notice looking for tax since they don't know how the funds were used without it showing up on the client's return.

That's the old IRS, grandpa.  The new IRS doesn't have time for such foolishness.
