Filing extension for initial 1120S

I am getting rejected for extension for an initial 1120S tax return. I verified the name and EIN is correct. I really don't want to call the IRS. I have done these in the past, but have a feeling I am missing something small. Thanks in advance!

Form 7004, the tax year ending date ('TaxPeriodEndDt' specified in the Return Header) must match the data in the e-file database unless one of the checkboxes in Line 5b - "Initial Return", "Final Return" or "Consolidated return to be filed" - is checked.

Error Resolution:
Verify that you have entered the correct EIN and check the tax period on the extension. Make corrections and file again. If it is already correct, contact the IRS to resolve the issue. This extension cannot be electronically filed until that is accomplished.

You may call the IRS e-File Helpdesk for assistance at: (866) 255-0654.

The S election isn’t in the IRS system.  Paper file the extension.  Unless you have seen the S acceptance, you probably want to attach the election when you file the return.

The 7004 is generally available and should be for an initial extension without meeting exceptions, see E-filing Form 7004. Let's look at the little stuff on 7004:

  • I am sure you marked initial return in the program but did the program carry it to the 7004, you may need to enter it again in part II, line 5b.
  • Initial return - the tax period you marked needs to match what was filed with the EIN.  Double check the EIN year end date and your return  year end date match
  • We know the name is the first 4 significant letters. Check the electronic filing worksheet. Look for the name control field. Something irrelevant like The.... may have gotten stuck in there somehow.

Not processed by IRS:

  • I have also seen this error when the EIN was very new and not yet in the e-file database.
  • It could be the IRS is still processing the 2553 S-corp election.
  • In these cases, you may as well mail it in. You can keep trying, the IRS will eventually get it processed.

GREAT info.... ten days ago.

And I do have to say these answers look suspiciously as if AI generated.

Are you an Intuit employee?

It's been a long day, a long week, a long month, and a long tax season but that post did get generate a non-AI smile 😁
