Federal Joint and two states married separate

I need help in figuring out the client and spouse live in NJ and CT states - want to file federal joint but need to file married separate due taxpayer lived and worked in NJ but the spouse lived and worked in CT state.

How do I create state returns as a resident married filing separately for CT return for a spouse to show Federal Adjusted Gross Income which is joint then of course deduction to reflect her portion.

The problem is when you do by splitting the joint to separate - their income also gets split but CT state one of those states requires to get federal AGI (not direct income).

I appreciate the input...

I had the exact same states years ago. They jointly retired to SC.

In the federal return, {File} {Split} Married Joint into separate  returns. Then enter all you need and prepare NJ for one and CT for the other.
