I filed a tax return for someone who was to be claimed as a dependent on their parent's tax return, except the checkbox was not checked indicating that they would be claimed on the parent's return. The parents return was filed a couple weeks later and it was rejected by the IRS for that reason. I amended the dependent's tax return and filed it indicating they would be claimed as a dependent on the parent's tax return. Is the best way to resolve the parent's tax return to mail in a paper copy now or is there a way to e-file without the IRS rejecting the return?
If the parent listed as the taxpayer gets an IPPIN, you can EF the parents return, they'll still be stuck waiting for processing of the kids amendment before they can complete processing for the parents return, but at least its not sitting in a mail pile somewhere.
Ten years from now, old-timers will still be talking about the Covid-era IRS mail piles.
We’re currently processing paper returns received during the months below.
