Do I need the taxpayer's signature to file Form 4868 automatic extension for them?

No but you should have their permission

someone asked abut the 8878 the other day...it appears to be a signature page for efiling an extension when money is due.  Ive never used it, when money is due I generally give the client the paper extension and have them mail a check.
