My client had a federal tax payment due with thier 2024 return which was successfully eFiled on 3/11/2025. They chose to have the balance due automatically withdrawn from their bank account (difference account from 2023 tax year). They also had a California refund automatically deposited into the same bank account. While the California refund was successfully deposited, the federal payment was not. I verified that the routing and account numbers used for both when filing the return were identical.
The return was filed using Lacerte software
What are the options as the federal payment was not withdrawn on neither the 15th of the 16th?
Call the phone number on the 8879 and see if its scheduled.
Half a dozen questions about this every year, which gives @IRonMaN purpose to his life. But this is the first year after IRS and Treasury got rid of much of the experienced IT staff, and demotivated the rest.
I don't like to do the payment from the software but a handful of my clients insist on it. Several years ago, a new client at the time insisted on going that route. For the first two or three years I would get a phone call from him because it didn't clear on 4/15. Then another call because it didn't clear on 4/16 ------etc, etc. It took awhile for him to get the hang of the idea there can be some delays. But that's why I don't like going that route ------ their problem becomes my problem.
I have been getting the same question over and over as well yesterday and today. I have responded to each email and text with a four word answer:
Patience is a virtue.
No more checks after 9/30/25 to or from US Treasury, with limited exceptions, per the current Executive Order.
Clients can use IRS Direct Pay instead of us doing direct debit.
