Why do you need an EFIN?

Level 1

To use TaxConnect you need to already have an EFIN. That was not clear when I bought the software, and I don't have one. In addition, the software interface is TERRIBLE. I had been using H&R Block in years past. Their interface was fine, but the software locked up all the time and they basically have no tech support. All of a sudden, they are no longer publishing software for Form 990. Hence my search for a replacement. TaxConnect has no interview interface to speak of. In addition, when you click on a box in you tax return forms, it opens to a screen which is not properly labeled. You need to enter a 1 or a 2, but it isn't clear what the effect will be. I have been using TurboTax for many years and was expecting the same kind of professional user interface. My mistake. After failing to be able to file my ONE 990, I reentered all my information into Form990.org in less than an hour as compared to the near full day I spent trying to get TaxConnect to work. For $41 I was easily able to enter all my information and finally file my return.

ProConnect is a professional tax software.  The IRS kinda frowns on any Joe Blow electronically e-filing returns so they want to have a little control over that process and require professional tax preparers to apply for an EFIN before they can start e-filing tax returns.

I hope you don't use Turbo Tax to prepare and sell tax return prep. That's against their service agreement.

Besides, if you did, and you also used Block's software, you needed a EFIN then, too.

"Why do you need an EFIN?"

Because the IRS requires it for those who electronically file.

"What are the EFIN requirements?

Effective in the tax year 2011, federal legislation mandates anyone filing more than 10 returns must electronically file. Before you can electronically file tax returns, you must apply to become an Authorized e-File Provider with the IRS and obtain an EFIN."

"To use TaxConnect you need to already have an EFIN."

"In order to e-file a return, you must have an EFIN number. Both e-file and paper filing are available."

"I have been using TurboTax for many years and was expecting the same kind of professional user interface. My mistake."

TT is DIY; not for professionals who are preparing returns for others. TT can be used by Forms or by Interview; and you can jump from one to the other.

You have to pick your lane, then use the tool that applies.

I would hope that they could give you a refund. You are not alone in finding that you want to do that one return for an organization, only to hit a rather hard brick wall.

Here's wishing you many Happy Returns

".....TurboTax.....and was expecting.......kind of professional user interface"

OK - that made me laugh out loud.   Nothing about Turdooohhhh Tax implies professional user.
