Adoption Credit E-File Critical Diagnostic

I have a return with a carryforward adoption credit, however, ProConnect is giving me an e-file critical diagnostic because one of the adopted children is now 18. The credit was from 2020 when the child was eligible. The child being 18 now has no bearing on the eligibility of the carryforward being used. Looks like this error was also in ProSeries too, but the user fix there was deleting the birth year out, which doesn't seem like that will be the work around in ProConnect.

Anyone dealt with this before? Worst case I'll do it in ProSeries and try the suggested fix there.

Is this a Warning? If so, you can go ahead and e-file. I just tried one with just the number input for carryover and no child. I got a warning that all the information should be entered.

Lacerte has https://accountants.intuit.com/community/tkb/choosetemplatepage/board-id/diagnostics/search-before-p... to look up the diagnostic numbers (not very complete, but ...) You could enter the number you see in ProConnect and see if it shows up.

You can try to e-file and see what happens, you should know right away if it can be filed.

So I had that warning and so then I put in the kid's info and then got the Diagnostic #862

Looks like someone else did have this problem too with Lacerte, but no one responded

That's a great lookup tool, I'm gonna bookmark that.

Unfortunately the other post was in the Making Improvements to the Program voting page. You got it in the correct spot. It might be an IRS thing or it might be a product thing. Not every user comes here and even fewer post their experience.

I am not really a high filer, but I know the input. I don't know what is happening with efile protocol.

I do got some time before needing to send this off, so hopefully I figure out a solution. One is just to change the birth year on the 8839, but I'd rather not if it goes through fine without doing that. We'll see, I still need some state forms to be ready and they owe me a small W2 as well.
