I received this error message when trying to file a 2022 Extension.

E-file Transmission Failure: A return with the same SSN or EIN has previously been submitted.

I called customer support and left hoping that clearing critical errors would help process the extension. Unfortunately, that did not work. Since it was already rejected, I copied it and made sure to clear the errors again; same message. Then I thought it was maybe the IP PIN but that's not working either. Both the original and the copy have grayed out SSN for the taxpayer, not the spouse. I've double checked the SSN and it is correct. I don't want to make another copy as it takes up my credits.

The only other time this happened, a return had been filed by their former preparer and they hadn't realized it. My client says that they've made no extension requests to another preparer for this year.

I really hope someone can respond. Please and thank you!

Prior preparer figured there was no harm in filing an extension for a client they hadn't heard from. 

 

You can mail an extension, have the client make an extension payment using IRS Direct Pay, or just treat the return as already having been extended.

Yes, it could be. However, I have filed for them the last 2 years. It's really weird that's happening. I filed an extension last year without error.

I'll keep digging but you're right. We may need to get that paper filing out soon. Thanks for your advice.

Identity theft is the other possibility.

Thanks for all who chimed in. My client states they didn't give anyone else permission to file on their behalf but will check with their previous preparer from 2019. I found out after the 3rd time reaching out to support that there was an extension filed by someone else but that's all they can tell me. It seems you don't need the IP PIN to file extension, only the return. Hopefully, I don't run into any issues with filing the return as I have filed the last two years.

I hope this helps someone else in the future. Be persistent, check all options; clerical, previous preparers, IRS, etc. Happy Filing Everyone!!
