I have a client who files MFS, last year he filed a 1040NR, with no income. This year, he has a W2, J2 visa, income, and was a US resident for all of 2021. When I am on screen 58.1, and trying to fill in the country of residence for 2021, the United States is not an option on the list. Should he file a 1040NR, or a regular 1040? When I take away all the info on section 58.1, it generates a 1040 form with the standard deduction, and a refund, but when the 58.1 section is populated, it generates a 1040 NR with tax owed? Thanks
