Incorrect critical diagnostics Form 8962

mmts
Level 3

Form 8962: Household income on line 3 must equal the total of line 2a, Modified AGI, and 2b, dependents' modified AGI, for efile purposes. If the total of lines 2a and 2b are negative, zero will print on line 3 and this return will need to filed as a conventional paper return.

To e-file, it must follow these rules.

Rule 1. Line 3 MUST equal the total of lines 2a and 2b.
Rule 2. If the sum of lines 2a and 2b are a negative then Line 3 MUST entered as Zero.

So IF the sum of lines 2a and 2b are a negative then Line 3 must entered as Zero and with that it breaks Rule 1 so it cannot be e-filed

The interpretation of the rules are incorrect that it cannot be e-filed. Rule 2 overwrites Rule 1 (note the If in Rule 2). I have used TaxAct and it did not reject the e-filed return.

Please fix this incorrect critical diagnostics. Or have an overwrite to fix the MAGI calculation on line 2a.

This is also applicable for ProConnect Tax.

Asking for any of the Lacerte or ProConnect rules about e-filing to change by posting here will be totally useless. Tax Act may not read the rules the same way Lacerte does. This is a user forum with all but a very few posts being answered by other users, who have no more power than you do.

https://accountants.intuit.com/community/lacerte-diagnostics/42135/ta-p/101338 is the company stand.

Maybe @IntuitGabi could get an employee to respond about company stance.

The fact that you responded so quickly, means it's not totally useless. And yes Intuit pays attention to this. The way that the rule is implemented at Intuit is incorrect. I never had an issue with e-filing this form when MAGI is negative using any other software provider.

As for the calculations on the form, a negative MAGI or a zero MAGI does not effect the outcome at all for the PTC. Only when MAGI is > zero it may have an impact.

You do realize George is NOT an Intuit employee, right?
