I was trying to print a prior year (2021) tax return but got this strange error:
In red letters: PRINT for this year is currently closed. Tax year 2024 and prior year tax returns are not available for print or e-file while the IRS is closed for e-file.
This is a big time bug!! What has printing a tax return anything to do with e-filing???
When I was using Lacerte it was never ever a problem to print a tax return. But in ProConnect they prevent us from printing an existing prior year tax return!!!
This is highly unacceptable. Fix this bug Intuit !!!

I found this from someone in the ProConnect Facebook group about people asking the same thing
"Is this a return that you had not yet burned a credit on? Seems thats the issue with everyone....if it's a return you had already purchased then you can print....but if it's a return that you had not yet purchased or used a credit on then somehow that's gotten tied into this Jan 13 date that restricts printing at this point."
So I'm guessing that is what is happening with yours as well. I think its all tied to the renewals that are processing. I just saw mine process on my credit card. So hopefully soon this will all be fixed.

I am having this issue as well (2022). This is ridiculous! I have a current subscription (they charged my credit card). I can't print a Form 2553 or Form 2848, not to mention the 2022 return that I promised a client. This is a MAJOR system issue.

Hi @mmts Thanks for posting in the community about not being able to print. Current year credits are not available for use at the moment. Printing will be available when billing has been processed for the current tax year and e-filing will be available once the IRS opens e-filing for the tax year.

For ProConnect Users that have 2023 and 2024 credits (unused returns already purchased) sitting in their banks, you can print 2023 and 2024 returns now respectively. 2023 credits will only work for Tax Year 2023. 2024 credits will only work for Tax Year 2024. If you do not have any credits remaining for those years or need an older year, those require the Tax Year 2025 credits to be used. Those credits are targeted for the week of January 12, 2026, to become active. Once they are active, printing will be enabled for all years.
If you are unsure if you have unused credits for 2023 and 2024, you can find out by going to the purchase screen. Click on the blue "Usage Details" link. Once inside you can select the tax year and it will show you how many individual and/or business returns that you purchased along with how many have been used.

Hi. I need to print a copy of my 2024 tax return but it says that I need permission to print. I already paid for this return. Do I need to pay something again?? Thanks.

Hi, this is a situation that is best resolved through our phone support because it could be a few different things. That error can happen when:
1) You have not purchased user access for 2025.
2) You do not have your role set to either one of the advanced tax roles or Primary Admin.
3) Your primary administrator has disabled the printing access for you.
4) You have a brand new account and we need to make sure all roles loaded to your profile.
Accordingly, please give us a call so that we can get it resolved for you. Contacting ProConnect Support

AM I TO UNDERSTAND THAT NOW, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE PURCHASED AND PAID TO PRINT AND FILE A RETURN FROM 2024, THAT BECAUSE IT IS 2025 AND I HAVE NOT YET PURCHASED MY CURRENT YEAR USER LICENSE THAT I CANNOT PRINT A FULL ALREADY PAID FOR COPY OF A 2024 TAX RETURN?
PLEASE ADVISE.
THANK YOU!

For ProConnect, you must have purchased current year user access to access any years inside the program for printing and/or efile. So you would need to have 2025 user access purchased to utilize any functions within the program. This is not a bug in the program. Please review this article: Understanding User Access in ProConnect .
1) If you are creating a new prior year return for 2023 or older, it will pull credits from 2025 for those returns whether you are printing only or e-filing.
2) If you are reprinting a return for a return that you previously efiled, it will not pull from any credits.
3) If you are creating a new 2024 return and have remaining 2024 credits, it will pull from those first until they are used and then it will pull from 2025.

Yes, that is correct @jenndp and @NPaul . 2025 user access is required to print or e-file within ProConnect. Understanding User Access in ProConnect

Correct! That is what the problem is. You already paid for that prior year return last year or earlier, you may have already e-filed it, and now you want to re-print it. Because current year User Access has not yet paid for, they disallow then to re-print a prior year tax return that was already paid for (i.e. used a credit for prior year).

Thanks for the reply but that is pretty ridiculous. Who can I speak with about getting a copy of my return? I don't think I will be preparing any returns this year so don't want to pay for something I won't use.
I did not realize I would lose access to everything I have ever done in your tax system. 😞
