1099-S Received for brother of deceased

Colmatt
Level 5

Brother received 1099-S for sale of deceased brother's home.  It is in the Estate of brother's name.  Other than the house that sold for $110,000 there were no other assets.

Is any tax return return required? Definitely loss on sale.

The IRS is going to be looking for a tax return with a 1099S floating around out there.

Would it have to be from the estate?

What ID number does the 1099S show?

Not the deceased, nor the brother.  92-xxxxxxx Possibly estate that brother unaware of.  Not a pretty story and not a lot of information.  Will have to dig further, I guess.
