To amend MFS to MFJ-do I amend one or both MFS returns to "zero out" and then file a combined MFJ 1040X?

Just need the logistics.  Both MFS have been filed and accepted.  Now want to file MFJ combining the two.

I believe you just file one amended return by adding the spouse's income on to the taxpayer's return and then attach an explanation on what you did.

I think this is covered in the 1040X instructions.
The more I know, the more I don't know.
