So IronWoman e-mailed a client a week and a half ago with a few questions on their schedule C. She gets an e-mail this morning saying "sorry, but we've been super busy" and goes on to answer "some" of the questions. Thank goodness that someone has been busy in the area because we have been bored stiff just hoping he would get back to us so that we would have had something to do for the last week and a half. After doing it for a bit, pulling the wings off of flies can only keep you occupied for so long. Hopefully the rest of you out in Intuit land aren't too bored at this time of year.
I love it when they reply. sorry we have been out of town on vacation.(Good for YOU) I have been stuck in my office trying to finalize tax season while you have been off enjoying time off!!!!
These are the times that try CPAs' souls.
Except for 4 family members waiting on huge trust K-1 for extensions, I've been done since Friday. Heart-rate finally getting back to normal.
2028 we have both Leap Year and April 15th falls on a Saturday so we get 3 extra days to work that year.
"2028 we have both Leap Year and April 15th falls on a Saturday so we get 3 extra days to work that year."
That's assuming we are still alive ---------------------- or not in prison for strangling a client for dropping off stuff on the 12th and then saying they are leaving the next day.
Just received an email this morning from a client. "Hey I apparently forgot about tax season this year, will you be able to fit me in? I would be very grateful!" HA HA HA HA sure I have nothing better to do this week!!!!
I have about 40 on extension (so far) and heard a few more dropped off paperwork today… most are entitled to refunds… no pressure, no aggravation… no refunds til I get around to it..,, think I’ll make a tee time for tomorrow
Yaawwn. Retirement is so relaxing.
"April 17, 2028 is a holiday in Washington DC, so (unless repealed)"
I'm all for repealing Washington. If we start with a clean slate of elected officials maybe the country will run a little better.
325 on extensions. may is already booked

My answer would be something like "Sure! I have some openings in May and June. Are there any particular days or times in May or June work well for you?"
I enjoy my April 15 now in a strange way. No appts. I spend the day verifying all returns have been filed, Homebase showing the customized client status details I want, and most importantly, efiling all the extensions that I ensured clients weeks ago I would efile. 😉 End the evening with a few cold beverages, hot wings and mozzarella sticks, and of course, file my own extension!
love all the posts as I've been dealing with almost all the same clients. I unfortunately got suckered into 2 appts tomorrow - missing even one interest statement and straight to extension - Was just planning on using the day to make sure all the returns are accepted - the rejected one are now good. and sitting here answering calls saying extension - see you in May.
Client calls yesterday WHEN do I have to make my tax payment by? I don't know how about 4/15?
Sigh! wish you all a happy last day and vacation !
But not as busy as last year, thanks to TurboTax
Total e-filing returns received (may not equal subtotals due to rounding)
2025 98,184,000 2026 97,969,000 -0.2
E-filing returns received from tax professionals 53,392,000 52,773,000 -1.2
E-filing returns received from self-prepared 44,792,000 45,196,000 0.9
I've been good this year.. haven't posted how many returns I have completed already as I know the pushback follows. .but I did mention how many on extensions I have. Very happy with ProSeries again this year.. looking forward to the phone call with them that they extended to us to discuss the program and suggestions..
My most pressing need/desire from ProSeries is to have the all the forms, as long as IRS has final forms by start of tax day ready to go.
I did not call tech support once this year.
So that really is my only request.. forms ready to go on day one.
I've been doing crosswords over here, picking the fleas off the dog! Not really, the dog would fire me if he had fleas.
I've read most of the responses, and I've got to say you guys are SO SO nice!! I've been doing this for decades - started when I was 5. My clients know, you bring me stuff the last week, maybe the last 2 weeks, you may be looking at an extension, "you owe last year, you can pay with your extension or expect a penalty if you DO end up owing - your choice." Believe me, my clients know I bend over backwards for them. I answer calls no matter where I am because most of the time, it takes 2 minutes to answer. But they also know our family has a family business and I have a special needs child that requires a lot of my time, and up until a couple of years ago I homeschooled our daughter who is now going to college to be a veterinarian and I helped take care of my grandparents, not to mention serving for various community non profits. So my clients know poor planning on their part does not mean an emergency on mine.
I say all that to say, yes sometimes we need to use this forum just to vent, but in case your having a hard time with this, its ok to tell your clients you are not going to drive yourself to an early grave just for them. We're already probably driving ourselves to an early grave for the collective, but you don't have to do it for one client. It's ok to say no. Just for those that need someone's permission, now you have it.
Haven't called P.S. support in quite a few years. Some problems are your own computer issues. Others are our own input errors. Others are P.S. and a P.S. employee on this board [sometimes] can help. Most of the problems with the software won't ever be fixed (printing goes off the page, this form is not supported, fonts print weird, etc.).
I often call just so they know they have an issue - I'm super OCD - and I want my return to be correct. But I tell them they need to fix it, and then in the survey I will tell them they need to fix it again. You're right,, though, sometimes it's just me putting something in weird or clicking the wrong square on accident, and they help me find it. But there are some that the tech will say, "Oh just ignore that." "Um, no, I don't want to send in my client's return that way." My favorite is when it tells me to attach a form that appears to already be attached. So I attach it again. But at least I'm getting it logged with Intuit that it's not working. I know some require a signature on the form, and most of mine are state related but still I like them to know that I know they aren't working.
Is it just me or are Tax Professionals extremely busy but under appreciated!!! It is all about each client individually and they can't see past the other Hundreds of clients you are trying to deal with!!! At the end we are burnt out, if you are a client whom procrastinates (Not my problem) We need to self medicate, if that is Fire Ball(Iron Man) or a relaxing vacation in the mountains that is our prerogative!!
Cheers to us ALLLL!!!!!
Many years ago a client brought info in on Monday, April 13. I told him we would work on it and probably extend it, and he approved.
We finished the next day, called him and he said he'd be in the next day, but didn't come in.
We extended it. Why bother?
Just when you thought you were done - wealthy client died. All assets in a trust. Instead of distributing to the beneficiaries directly, 18 sub-trusts were created, all with payments and tax returns due tomorrow. Why do lawyers make the simple so complex?
Small 990 client calls IronWoman this morning. New treasurer for the entity that their 990 was originally due March 15th. She has been "really busy" and is learning Quickooks and asks IronWoman if she can look at her Quickbooks file before her board meeting tonight. As Bill Engvall would say ----------------- here's your sign!
Fees.
DASCPA, I had a friend come to me, thankfully at the beginning of the tax season, with an estate problem. Mom lived in one state, and daughter (my friend) lives in another. Mom's is not doing well, so daughter moves mom to her state so she can help her in her final days. Mom is living with daughter while she still has a house in original state. Mom dies in 2024, daughter files federal return for mom and non residential in original state and residential in daughter's state. Then they receive a 1099 in the trust name for the final payout. So daughter files amended for all three - still all in mom's name under mom's SSN. IRS sends letter to Mom's address, which is no longer Mom's because by then they've sold the house. New owners say they sent letter to son/brother but he never got it. She brings it all to me wondering what she did wrong and how to figure out what is wrong. 😐.
As many of you know, I have never taken an accounting course in my life, so to find gainful employment after April 15 I had to go to law school, and now I do a lot of estate planning and probate work because (with rare exceptions) I haven't taken any new clients for 20 years, and I'm just trying to survive the old ones.
I make sure to tell all my clients that they're not allowed to die before April 15, but one of them didn't make it. The widow called to report his demise on Sunday, with of course a long narrative about his final days. That's why I have a sympathetic assistant who patiently listens to such stories. And passes along the standard advice: Nothing has to be done right now, except the mortuary arrangements. We'll get back to you later this week.
Surviving spouse is much younger but recently retired, so after this year may be a nonfiler. The husband was still working, a W-2 job he could do from home with just a computer, telephone and decades of experience. Sort of like preparing tax returns.
Hey BobKamman, I have my business degree with a major in Accounting, minor in law, sat for the Exam, keep up with my CPE each year, but the man that taught me about tax returns and more importantly how to deal with the IRS was a real estate agent who started doing returns for his out of state RE clients. And more power to you and your assistant, the older my clients get the more I deal with that stuff. I actually had a friend pass away last year and am so thankful I have her attorney to reach out to when I or her parents have issues with her estate. Because it's normally "I think . . . "🙄
