Several elderly clients have received a 1099-K from PayPal for around $1000 amounts that they have no idea what they are for. They don't use PayPal. Small payments over six months. I'm beginning to think these are scams. PayPal will not explain when called. How shall I handle it?

Throw the 1099-K away, and tell the client to possibly expect a letter from the IRS.
You can even prepare a response and give it to the client now, so they can send it in when if/when they get the IRS notice.
Are they selling some of their knickknacks and stuffed dolls with scary eyes on Ebay?
